Introduction

The Certification in Digital 2D Animation course is an intensive tailor made training programme designed to get anyone with none to minimal prior experience working with Adobe applications such as Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects, and make them familiar with it's interface. In addition you will learning basic character design and animation. This programme is specifically designed for those who need to add animation to their skill set, jump start their career in animation or just learn a different type of workflow using Adobe applications for animation.

Course Modules

The first course module provides an overview of the entire learning programme. Students will understand how the various Adobe applications work together and the introduction will provide a thorough understanding of what the course objectives and outcomes are.

Theory of Animation

Theory of Animation module provides an overview of the basic terminology of animation and the industry. This module will aid you in understand how animation works, show you the power of animation and overall give you additional knowledge to a skill that will add a dynamic feel to your future creative projects.

  1. History of animation.
  2. 12 principles of animation.
  3. Walk Cycles.

Adobe Illustrator CC for Animation

Illustrator is used for vector design & layout. Its drawing tools, colour control & professional controls help capture the idea of the artist and helps experiment on them digitally using tools like patterns, brushes & symbols. During this course, students will also learn how to structure their illustrations and further develop its style. Afterwards,  in here they will properly learn how to build their artworks and will later on edit them in Photoshop before importing them into After Effects for animation.

  2. Working with artwork.
  3. Editing & combining shapes & paths.
  4. Artwork Art boards.
  5. Drawing with Illustrator.
  6. Working with colour.
  7. Artwork layers.
  8. Gradients & patterns;
  9. Transferring hand-drawn artworks into the Adobe Illustrator work space.
  10. Optimising artworks to be rigged in After Effects.
  11. Structuring artworks through groups & layers.
  12. Exporting the artwork to be further altered in Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop CC for Animation

Photoshop for animation is a course designed for people with none to minimal experience in Adobe Photoshop. The course pertains to artist who would like to take their art onto a digital format. Knowledge of the programme is the secret to a successful digital artist, this course is designed to get you to grips with not only the programme, but art theory itself. You will be equipped with the necessary skill sets to take your passion to the next level.

Course Outline

  1. Getting to know Photoshop.
  2. Working with selections.
  3. Basics of layers.
  4. Quick fixes.
  5. Cloning with clone stamp.
  6. Compositing.
  7. Painting with mixer brush {Wacom tablet recommended}
  8. Editing layers.
  9. Applying filters.
  10. Introduction to brush presets.
  11. Painting with brush presets.

Adobe After Effects CC for Animation

After Effects for animation is a course designed for people with none to minimal experience in Adobe After Effects. Anyone who wishes to work in the field of animation, video or currently works in these fields, and is looking to add animations into their projects can enrol into this dynamic programme. This programme will prepare you to start work as an animation artist and you will be well on your way to featuring animations using Adobe After Effects.

Course Outline

  1. Getting to know After Effects.
  2. Working with shapes.
  3. Animating text.
  4. Animating presentations.
  5. Animating layers.
  6. Creating simple animation effects and presets.
  7. Introduction to puppet tool.
  8. DUIK: an After Effects plugin.
  9. DUIK on custom shapes.
  10. Rigging character using DUIK.
  11. Animating walk cycle.
  12. Rendering and Outputs.

Animation Internship

The internship phase of the Certification in Digital 2D Animation has been developed by the animation department at Johnathan Andrews Academy to plunge the students directly into the passage of an animation production and content creation. Interns will further develop their newly acquired skills to collaborate with the Johnathan Andrew studio’s photographers, scriptwriters, editors and many other skilled creatives in which the intern can attain a wider range of skills beyond the 2D digital animation programme.

The outline of the internship is subject to change as a result of the demands and requirements of the Johnathan Andrews Studio animation department. Below is the scope of work that interns can expect:

  1. Traditional 2D animation to get intern used to drawing on demand.
  2. Develop intern’s animation skill to specialise in a specific phase of the animation pipeline, from drawing, painting and rigging characters in After Effects
  3. Collaboration with in-house creative and other interns.
  4. Assisting the JA Studio’s animation department in related projects.
  5. Develop concepts, art and animation for the JAi Animation Channel.

DURATION
The Course Duration is 6 months in total:
• 38 sessions of +-3 hours per session - this takes three months to complete.
• Three months Internship after completion of all the course modules.

ASSESSMENT
• To ensure that you master the course material, you will be required to complete various assignments, tests and exams.
• The 3 month internship is compulsory to complete.
• The JAA Certificate in Digital 2D Animation is awarded if a pass mark of 75% average is achieved.
• Students who maintain a minimum pass mark of 75% in each of the course modules is awarded the JAA Certificate of Merit in Digital 2D Animation.
• Students who maintain a minimum pass mark of 75% in each of the course modules, and where the total average is 95% and above, is awarded the JAA Certificate of Merit in Digital 2D Animation with Distinction.

Adobe Illustrator CC for Animation:
• Illustrator interface.
• Understanding bezier curves.
• Trace your hand-drawn art.
• Creating custom brush & graphics.

• Saving for digital & print.
• Live Paint & Live Colour.
• Drawing in Illustrator.
• Enhanced workflow & integration with other Adobe applications.
• Working with effects.

Adobe Photoshop CC for Animation:
• Comfortable navigation of Photoshop.
• Layer organization.
• Working with selections accurately.
• Photo editing.
• Basic painting techniques.
• Creating a single image using multiple images.
• Colour management .
• Editing lighting of images.
• Knowledge of Photoshop’s interface.
• Work with layers.
• Photo editing.
• Photoshop painting techniques.
• Applying filters to images.
• Blending modes.

Adobe After Effects CC for Animation:
• After Effects interface.
• Adobe Photoshop to After Effects workflow.
• Basic character, shape and text animation.
• Installing and using custom plugins.
• Character rigging in After Effects.
• Rendering and export files.
• Create animations.
• Work with layers.
• Apply effects.
• Demonstrate your knowledge of techniques required to prepare a character for animation in After Effects.

Animation Internship:
• Interns will be able to develop, construct and execute ideas to create original animations.
• Understand their skills and utilise them to fit into any animation workflow.
• Interns will be able to evaluate constraints and use knowledge to work under specific conditions to complete animation projects under any reasonable conditions.
• Appreciate the art of animation and synthesise highly creative methods to improve animation workflows.
• Choose the best methods in animation to create satisfactory results according to briefs.
• Creating Motion Graphic animation such as the Gusto Project and Jonathan Andrews International brand animations will become second nature to you.
• Incorporating yourself in an animation workflow such as the Animate TV episodes will engage you to draw, illustrate and rigging in After Effects.
• Drawing and painting art, ready to be animated in After Effects.
• Illustrating drawn images ready for painting is a a skill the interns will master.

COURSE FEE
The course fee per person is R 39 500 (if all fees are settled before course commencement).

PAYMENT TERMS
• The full course fee can be paid on registration, or installments can be arranged which includes a surcharge.
• The total course fee has to be settled before the course is completed.

INSTALLMENTS
• A deposit of R 10 000 is payable on enrollment and the balance is payable in 6 installments of R 6 565 per month.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
• No animation experience is required.
• It will be an advantage, but is not a requirement, to have a basic understanding of Adobe Applications.
• The course is presented in English and students are required to have a good command of the language to engage in classes.
• Basic computer literacy is required.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR THE COURSE
• Students are required to have their own laptop computer (Windows or Mac) and Adobe Creative Cloud Subscription for the course. Please refer below for the minimum computer specs.
• Internet connection for work at home, during class and studio (e.g. Mweb Subscription) - a WiFi connection is available which can be used to access your account - for software activation, validation of subscriptions, and access to online services and resources.
• A monitor to use with the laptop and Wacom tablet is also required.

• 4GB of RAM (8GB recommended)

• OpenGL 2.0-capable system
• QuickTime 7.6.6 software required for QuickTime features

• Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
• Mac OS X versions 10.9, 10.10, or 10.11
• 4GB of RAM (8GB recommended)
• 6GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)
• Additional disk space for disk cache (10GB recommended)

• OpenGL 2.0-capable system
• QuickTime 7.6.6 software required for QuickTime features
